Pfizer Job Losses Highlight Need for Local Transport Improvements

9.48.40pm GMT Fri 4th Feb 2005

"The announcement by Pfizer that jobs will be lost from their Sandwich site is bad news for East Kent", said Guy Voizey, Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate for South Thanet.

"This shows the dangers of a local economy reliant on a few companies for employment, and underlines the folly of the decision to withdraw funding from the East Kent Access road between Ramsgate and Sandwich", said Mr Voizey.

"The confirmation that East Kent will benefit from quicker journey times to London via the Channel Tunnel Rail Link is welcome, but there is still a long time to wait. We need to work now to improve local transport links. By encouraging more businesses to East Kent, through an investment in local infrastructure, the local economy will become less reliant on the international pharmaceutical market in the future."
